I am excited to share this crochet project with you for an easy crochet hat that can capture your personal style.

Whether you want to use it for summer hats or beach hats, this simple bucket hat pattern will work up in no time.

This free crochet pattern has a simple construction and is suitable for beginner crocheters too. The pattern starts with a simple magic ring using basic crochet stitches.

I used the half double crochet stitch for a softer hat with a little movement. However, if you prefer you could use single crochet stitches in combination with a smaller hook for a slightly stiffer hat.

You repeat increase rounds until you reach the number of stitches that is big enough for your head circumference. The main body of the hat is then worked up in rounds joined with a slip stitch (sl st).

I recommend using a stitch marker to keep track of the starting point of each round. You will also need a tapestry needle for sewing in any tail ends of yarn.

Crochet Bucket Sun Hat Yarn Details

For crochet sun hats, I thoroughly recommend using cotton yarn. It is the best yarn to use for its durability.

You can wash your crochet bucket hat many times and don’t have to worry about getting it wet or covered in sand on the beach. One of the best yarns to use as an alternative would be cotton lily sugar yarn.

The other alternative would be raffia yarn which provides more stability and avoids the floppy brims that come with using cotton yarn.

You should also use as small hook as possible, I would suggest a 4 mm crochet hook size for a simple hat in a solid color.

Handmade hats are great projects for crafting on the go too. They are super portable and you can pick them up and put them down anywhere.

One thing you have to keep in mind is the gauge swatch. I know it can be a tedious process, however, you are making an accessory that needs to fit well on your head.

So I definitely don’t recommend skipping this part of the process.
