Sitting outside watching the spring making its first appearancesā€¦ Tulips and daffodils swaying in the wind all proud and colourful announcing the arrival of the warmer weather. You catch their sweet smell as the wind brushes past your face.

I pull my crochet shawl tighter over my shouldersā€¦ close my eyes and and let the wind play with my hairā€¦

Filet Crochet Shawl Design Process

Settled in my usual spot in the living room I was brainstorming ideas for the next design. Sometimes you can get so carried away by trying to come up with different and unusual stitch combinations. But sometimes it is so good just to stick to a couple of basic stitches. And still create a stunning crochet design.

That’s exactly how designing this filet crochet shawl come about. I had an idea for a lovely blanket using the geometric motif. I was exploring different techniques on how to achieve this design. Then it suddenly hit me! I don’t need fancy stitches and complicated stitch combinations. This filet crochet shawl only uses two different stitches- double crochet and chain stitch. It is just as simple as that. But would you just look at the stunning lacy crochet shawl?

I have originally designed this beautiful Electric Blue Wrap for Simply Crochet magazine. The pattern has sat on my computer untouched for so long! I have finally decided to release this beauty on my blog.

YARN I USED FOR MY FILET CROCHET SHAWL

I used Scheepjes Maxi Sugar Rush in Electric Blue. This is such a lovely yarn to work with. It is super smooth and doesn’t split at all. I used 2 mm crochet hook so this was a labour of love but I am so glad I made this design.

Filet Crochet Technique

This type of crocheted fabric is lacy and it is gridlike. It uses 2 different techniques – filet crochet block and filet crochet space. It is mostly worked from a graph or a symbol diagram. Patterns are created by combining solid and open meshes, usually working the design in solid meshes on a background of open meshes.

On the chart below each black square is filet crochet block which consists of 3 double crochet stitches. Each white square is filet crochet space which consists of 1 double crochet and 2 chain stitches. Filet crochet forms patterns by filling in parts of a mostly chain stitch mesh with double crochet stitches.
