Pattern Notes

  • The hat is worked bottom up
  • The pattern starts with the ribbed brim
  • ribbed brim is worked in short rows of sc blo st rows until you reach your desired circumference
  • the brim is then joined into a continuous round by crocheting the last row and underside of foundation chain together
  • the main body of the hat is then worked around the long edge of the hat brim
  • you will be working around the end stitch of each end of each row of the hat brim and pick up stitches in each row
  • so the number of rows of the hat brim will equal the number of stitches of the hat main body
  • to adjust the size of the hat, you will need to adjust the length of the hat brim when working the short sc blo rows
  • for the main stitch pattern to work, you will need to adjust by multiples of 6 sts
  • then simply join the hat brim into a round and continue working along the long edge of the brim
  • you can refer to the handy hat sizes chart below when adjusting the size
  • the crown of the hat is not shaped
  • You will cinch the crown with a needle to close the top

Rnd 1: 3 ch (doesn’t count as a st throughout), starting in same st at the bottom of 3 ch, 1 dc around each end sc across the bottom hem, sl st to top of beginning 3 ch. [48 (54, 60, 66, 72, 78, 84) dc]

Rnd 2: 3 ch, *1 FPdc, 1 dc/FPdc2tog, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, 1 FPdc/dc2tog; rep from * around, sl st to top of first FPdc. [8 (9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14) pattern repeats]

Repeat Rnd 2 until you have 9 (10, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14) rounds in total.

Fasten off leaving a long tail.

Using the needle and the tail end, cinch the top of the hat closed.

How to cinch the top of the hat

Classic round cinch using running stitch:

Step 1: thread a large yarn needle using the tail end still attached to the hat or use a new piece of yarn and securely attach to the first stitch of the hat

Step 2: insert the needle through the stitch from outside in, miss the next stitch. Then insert the needle through the next stitch from inside back out. This is called running stitch as it is movable and adjustable.

Step 3: continue around the hat opening inserting needle in and out through every other stitch. I do not recommend using every stitch as they bunch up too much. It is also easier to close the hole tightly if you use every second stitch.

Step 4: once you have worked all the way around the hat opening and you have reach the first stitch you started from, pull on the working yarn and start closing the hat.

Step 5: pull the opening closed as tight as you can until all the stitches are bunched up and there is no hole left. Secure the yarn tail end by making a knot and sewing in securely so your opening will not come undone.

Attach a pom pom of your choice.

Alternatively, you can use the X closure for your hat and leave the pom-pom off.
