SINGLE CROCHET BOBBLE STITCH

I’m really fond of this textured crochet stitch because it is so easy! Without a doubt I love texture but sometimes you need complicated crochet stitches to achieve it.

As well as that, they are notorious yarn eaters and create quite a dense fabric.

As a result I have been playing around with single crochet stitch and applied the technique of a bobble stitch to it- that’s when single crochet bobble stitch (sc bo) has been born.

Not only does this easy crochet stitch work in rounds but it also creates a lovely texture when worked in rows.

CROCHET NAPOLY HAT DESIGN PROCESS AND SINGLE CROCHET BOBBLE STITCH

This chunky crochet hat is giving me all the feels. It reminds me of a cold winter evening with marshmallows melting on top of a steaming cup of hot chocolate.

The double brim of the hat is so warm and the slouchy top gives it that cosy relaxed feel. I topped my hat off with faux fur pom pom.

There are some great handmade shops that offer faux fur pom poms at such a reasonable price.

I used Yarn and Colours Super Charming yarn for my hat. It is a lovely yarn to crochet with. It creates a lovely texture paired up with the lovely single crochet bobble stitch.

Other yarns that would work just as good include Scheepjes River Washed XL or Stone Washed XL.

MATERIALS

Yarn and Colours Super Charming [chunky/bulky weight; 75m per 50g ball; 66% cotton and 34% acrylic] x 2 (2, 3, 3, 4) balls. (for the hat pictured I have used 2 balls in Cream and 1 ball in Old Pink)

OR 100 (130, 180, 220, 280) m of substitute yarn

Please note I have tried my very best to calculate yarn amounts as accurately as possible but the total amount of yarn you need may vary depending on your tension.

10 sts x 11 rounds = 10 x 10 cm measured over single crochet bobble stitch for the main body of the hat

STITCHES AND ABBREVIATIONS (US CROCHET TERMS)

ch- chain stitch

hdc in tlo– half double crochet through third loop only

sl st- slip stitch

sc bo– single crochet bobble stitch- watch video tutorial here

inv dec– invisible decrease- insert hook through front loop only of the next 2 stitches and work 1 stitch through both of these loops

PATTERN NOTES

Pattern starts with working the double brim. The double brim is worked in rounds of hdc in tlo joined with sl st at the end of each round.

The double brim is then joined in round by sewing up the first and last row together to create the hat band.

The body of the hat is then worked around the log edge of the double brim.

The first sc bo round is worked around the beginning 2 ch sts of the double brim band.

The body of the hat is slouchy, the last 3 rounds are decreased to make it easier when sewing up the top opening.

Check out the video tutorial below where I explain the hat construction, show you how to work hdc in tlo, where to pick up sc bo stitches and how to work the invisible decrease.

SIZE ADJUSTMENTS

  • The beginning chain determines the height of the double brim. To make the double brim taller add any number of sts to the beginning chain.
  • The number of rounds of the double brim determines the finished circumference of the hat, to adjust the circumference, add/take away the number of rounds.
  • To adjust the finished height of the hat, add/take away rounds of the sc bo rounds
