Free Purl Single Crochet Stitch Tutorial
This is a free tutorial showing you how to work the purl single crochet stitch. Create knit-look purl stitch with your crochet hook!
I always enjoy a unique technique or a stitch. Especially one that is created by a simple change to a basic stitch.
That is exactly what purl single crochet stitch is!
As the name suggests it is a variation of the standard single crochet stitch which is so easy to make.
To add the “purl element” to the single crochet, all you need to do is change the position of the working yarn.
Very much like purl stitch in knitting, you have to bring the working yarn to the from of your work and that is it!
Super simple technique that creates a lovely subtle texture.
Purl Single Crochet FREE Tutorial
This is such an easy stitch variation on the basic single crochet stitch. I have filmed a quick video tutorial that will teach you something brand new in just a few seconds.
As I mentioned above, all you need to do in order to create the purl variation on the single crochet is change the position of the working yarn.
Rather than working with the yarn from the back, you will need to bring it forward before you insert your hook into the stitch!
Photo Tutorial
Here is a photo tutorial on how to work the purl single crochet stitch very easily.
Firstly, to start the next stitch you need to change the position of the working yarn. Grab it and bring it to the front of your work.
Insert your hook into the next stitch with the working yarn at the front of your work.
Grab the working yarn and loop it around the end of your hook. You will create a loop at the bottom of stitch which will give it the purl look.
Hold onto the small loop at the base of the stitch, pull the working yarn through the stitch.
You will now have two loops on your hook. You can also release the small loop at the base of the stitch.
Yarn over and pull through both loops just as you would finish off a standard single crochet.
Video Tutorial
Sometimes it is much easier to see the whole motion in a video so you can see exactly where to place the working yarn and how the stitch works.
This is a short and easy video that will show you how to do just that. If you enjoyed the video please subscribe to my YouTube Channel.
Project Ideas
This is a really great and easy stitch to create. It lends itself to many different projects.
If you wanted to first practice the stitch, why not make a quick an easy washcloth?
I have used this great stitch for a couple of projects.
Firstly, it is my Crochet Bomber Jacket that is a free pattern on the blog. It gives this cardigan a subtle texture.
Secondly, I have used this stitch in my Cabled Cowl design. This cowl uses the purl single crochet stitch that is worked in round. As you can see the stitch works well in rounds as well as in rows.
The Cabled Cowl will be released very soon!
