Crochet Cancer Challenge 2026
I’m delighted to be taking part in the 2026 Crochet Cancer Challenge, a wonderful annual initiative that brings crocheters and designers together to make a difference through handmade kindness.
Throughout October, participating designers share free crochet hat patterns, inviting makers to do more than simply download a pattern: each download is a pledge to crochet at least one hat and donate it to someone undergoing cancer treatment.
A handmade hat can offer more than warmth; it can bring comfort, dignity, and a little reminder that someone cares during an incredibly difficult time.
My contribution to this year’s challenge is the Anila Beanie, which you can download for FREE.
By downloading the pattern, you’re joining me in this meaningful effort to turn our love of crochet into something that can bring comfort, hope, and a little extra warmth to someone who needs it.
Every stitch matters, and together we can make a difference, one hat at a time.

Pattern Notes
- the beanie is worked bottom up
- you will work up the brim which uses single crochet through back loop only ribbing
- the amount of rows of the brim determines the finished circumference of the beanie
- you can adjust the circumference by working more/fewer rows of the brim
- the main body stitch pattern repeats over 3 stitches, so make sure the brim has amount of rows which is a multiple of 3
- the main body uses a modified crossed half double crochet stitch with 1 ch-sp between the stitches
- you can adjust the height of the beanie by working more/fewer rounds of the crossed half double crochet before continuing with the shaping of the crown
- the crown is shaped with rounds of single crochet stitches to decrease the amount of stitches
- the beanie is then finished off with sewing the top opening and adding a faux fur pom pom which is optional
- the pattern has been written as one size fits most but you can refer to the sizing table below for the most common sizes of beanies and adjust
- the stitches in [ ] at the end of the row are stitch counts, not instructions to work those stitches

How to cinch the top of the textured crochet beanie
Classic round cinch using running stitch:
Step 1: thread a large yarn needle using the tail end still attached to the hat or use a new piece of yarn and securely attach to the first stitch of the hat
Step 2: insert the needle through the stitch from outside in, miss the next stitch. Then insert the needle through the next stitch from inside back out. This is called running stitch as it is movable and adjustable.
Step 3: continue around the hat opening inserting needle in and out through every other stitch. I do not recommend using every stitch as they bunch up too much. It is also easier to close the hole tightly if you use every second stitch.
Step 4: once you have worked all the way around the hat opening and you have reach the first stitch you started from, pull on the working yarn and start closing the hat.
Step 5: pull the opening closed as tight as you can until all the stitches are bunched up and there is no hole left. Secure the yarn tail end by making a knot and sewing in securely so your opening will not come undone.
Attach a pom pom of your choice.
Alternatively, you can use the X closure for your hat and leave the pom-pom off.
