This easy crochet baby hat would make a lovely present for a new arrival
Read on for the free crochet hat pattern for babies and stitch tutorial I am sharing with you today.
I have created this hat when we were expecting our second baby. It was quite a while ago as Cole is now a toddler.
You can make one for the new mom-to-be and her arrival as a baby shower gift or donate a few to your local hospital
The crochet baby hat no longer fits him as it was a newborn size and has been passed onto another baby.
However, I am happy that I can still share this simple baby hat crochet pattern with you! You can also make this easy baby crochet hat in different sizes.
It only uses basic crochet stitches and it is easy to adjust so you only need basic crochet skills.

Crochet Baby Hat Pattern Details
I was sent the Crochet Society box no.2 curated by Bella Coco Crochet as I was one of the designers who designed a pattern for the box.
It contained the lovely Caron X Pantone yarn in Fearie Cakes colourway. The softness of this yarn has been calling out to me to make another crochet hat pattern for babies using basic stitches!
So I did…
The baby crochet hat received a great response over on Instagram!
I was so pleased about it, so I decided to pop the free crochet baby hat pattern up onto the blog for you to make as a great gift! This is an easy crochet hat pattern suitable for beginner skill level.

How do you crochet a newborn baby hat?
This simple baby hat pattern I made came out in 3-6 month size as I have made a few newborn hats already so I wanted to make a bigger size. The instructions below include 0-3 months size too.
The crochet baby hat I made has got 3 full rows in each colour in the body of the hat.
However, I could only achieve this by using up leftovers from another ball of Caron X Pantone yarn I was initially sent to design with.
It is a worsted weight yarn that comes in variety of different colors and is great for crochet hats or an adorable baby hat.
The finished hat weighs 89 grams so you will have plenty of yarn to finish the hat from 1 hank of yarn for a baby boy or a baby girl in a different colorway.
However, you might just have to join the next colour in the middle of the row rather than keep the 3 rows per each colour.
I have written the cute hat pattern for 0-3 months and 3-6 months sizes as these 2 sizes are achievable from 1 hank of yarn.
I will give you instructions on how to adjust the size easily and make the hat bigger for 6-12 months and beyond. The adjustments notes for this basic beanie are within the pattern in italics.
Just keep in mind that you will need more than 1 hank of this yarn.

CROCHET HAT FOR BABIES PATTERN NOTES

- the brim is then joined into a round and you continue working around the long edge of the brim = hat height
- the last 5 (6) rounds shape the top of the hat
FREE CROCHET HAT FOR BABIES MAIN PATTERN
Chain 6 for both sizes leaving a long tail for sewing in ends.
If you wanted to make a bigger size hat you can increase the starting chain of the brim. This will make the brim wider therefore the finished hat height higher. Yo could chain 11 for bigger sizes which will give you 10 sc wide brim.
Row 1: starting in 2nd ch from the hook, sc across, turn. [5 sc]
Row 2: 1 ch (first ch doesn’t count as a st here and throughout), sc in blo across, turn. [5 sc]
Repeat Row 2 another 46 (52) times.
For bigger sizes keep repeating Row 2 until the brim is long enough to go around your head.
Fold the brim in half and sew or slip stitch together to form a ring, continue working along the long edge of the brim.
Row 1: 1 ch, working around the end st of each row of the brim, sc around, sl st to first st. 48 (54) sc
Row 2: 2 ch (doesn’t count as a st here and throughout), 1 puff st into first st, 2 ch, miss next st, (1 puff st into next st, 2 ch, miss next st) repeat around, sl st to top of beginning 2 ch. 24 (27) puff st
Row 3: sl st into next 2 ch-sp, 2 ch, (1 puff st into 2 ch-sp, 2 ch, miss next puff st) repeat around, sl st to top of beginning 2 ch. 24 (27) puff st
Repeat Row 3 another 3 times for both sizes.
Crochet Hat Pattern For Babies continues…
Larger sizes keep repeating Row 3 until you reach about 6-7 cm below the desired hat height. You can find universal hat measurements in the table below.
Use the last 6-7cm of the hat height to shape the top of the crown. Decrease the number of stitches evenly around the hat on each row using the puff st 2 tog stitch tutorial above until you have around 5- 6 stitches left.
Row 7: sl st into next 2 ch-sp, 2 ch, *(1 puff st into 2 ch-sp, 2 ch, miss next puff st) repeat 4 (7) times, 1 puff st 2 tog; repeat from * around, sl sto to top of beginning 2 ch. 20 (24) puff st

Row 9: sl st into next 2 ch-sp, 2 ch, *(1 puff st into 2 ch-sp, 2 ch, miss next puff st) repeat 2 (3) times, 1 puff st 2 tog; repeat from * around, sl sto to top of beginning 2 ch. 12 (16) puff st
Row 10: sl st into next 2 ch-sp, 2 ch, *(1 puff st into 2 ch-sp, 2 ch, miss next puff st) repeat 1 (2) times, 1 puff st 2 tog; repeat from * around, sl sto to top of beginning 2 ch. 8 (12) puff st
