Pattern Notes

  • the tree is made from a simple crochet granny square
  • you will then fold one corner of the square in half to create the top point of the tree
  • then bring the opposite corner into the middle where it meets the join
  • crochet or sew the square together into the tree shape
  • add a loop to the top so you can use it as a hanging tree decoration
  • I added a 12 mm wooden beed to the base of the loop, to do this you will also need a 2 mm crochet hook which is small enough to go through the bead opening and large enough to grab the loop and pull it through
  • for the tree trunk you can use a cinnamon stitck, if you do not have one, you can also use a small branch stick you find outside
  • to add a special finishing touch, tie a bow with the jute string or a piece of ribbon onto the tree trunk

Fold the square according to the diagram on next page to create a triangle tree shape.

granny square christmas tree folding instructions

1.With wrong side facing, turn the square so that there is a point at the top. Grab the two corners on the sides.

2. Bring the two corners together in the middle.

3. You can secure the two corners together using a piece of scrap yarn or a stitch marker.

4. This is what the square should look like after folding.

5. Have the two folded edges facing you, join yarn in top 2 ch-sp, chain 20 and sl st into the same 2 ch-sp to create a hanging loop.

6. Then single crochet the two edges together from the top towards the bottom.

7. Then fold the remaining 2 ch-sp corner at the bottom towards the middle.

8. You can again secure it with a stitch marker or a piece of scrap yarn.

9. With yarn still attached, crochet through the two 2 ch-sps to join and through each stitch towards the bottom point. Fasten off.

10. Then rejoin yarn in the middle again and crochet through the other two 2 ch-sps and down towards the bottom point on the other side. Fasten off.
