Crochet Flower Granny Square

I’m celebrating the granny square day with my 3D daisy granny square! Check out the free crochet flower granny square pattern below and join in the celebrations!

GRANNY SQUARE DAY

Granny Square Day is an international online celebration of these iconic square patterns on Instagram.

It was all started back in 2014 by Susan Regalia (@suregal27).

However, Susan didn’t anticipate the popularity of the event.

As a result, after 6000 posts on social media in 2018 on the hashtag she handed the reins over to Simply Crochet Magazine.

The fantastic magazine team has definitely made this day to reach its full potential and unite crafters worldwide.

I am so excited to be joining the celebrations of crochet squares because it’s such a great day in the crochet community. The official Granny Square day is on 15th August and I can’t wait!

HOW TO GET INVOLVED?

Without a doubt, there is going to be a real buzz on Instagram! But what do you need to do?

  1. firstly, make some crochet granny squares! It could be a traditional granny stitch square or you can use creative ways to make any beautiful pattern. Incorporate flower petals, crochet flowers, basic stitches, cluster stitch, puff stitches or popcorn stitches… it is totally up to you!
  2. secondly, take a photo on a plain background color to make your square really “pop”
  3. crop the photo so that the single square fills the entire screen of your Instagram post
  4. then post to Instagram with #grannysquareday followed by the current year on 15th August
  5. Moreover, have fun enjoying all the square flower patterns!

When viewing the hashtag on the Instagram grid, it automatically assembles a virtual granny square blanket!

CROCHET FLOWER GRANNY SQUARE

I have designed a 3D daisy crochet flower granny square, especially for this day!

The free crochet pattern consists of a sweet flower motif in the middle.

The subsequent rounds are then worked to the back of the flower making it pop out and be three-dimensional (3D).

Lastly, it has a couple of rounds of lacy crochet stitches to finish this colorful pattern off.

I have used Deramores Studio DK yarn for my crochet flower granny square in Citrine, Light Pink, Lime and Peridot.

Unfortunately, this yarn has now been discontinued. However, there are plenty of basic acrylic yarn alternatives you can use instead.

As well as the multicolored one, I made another square all in same colour.

For this square, I used Stylecraft Special DK in Apricot. This yarn would also be a suitable alternative.

For the multicolored square, you can use Sunshine, Fondant, Meadow, and Green.

VIDEO TUTORIAL

I want everybody to be able to join in hence why I made a video tutorial of this free pattern for daisy crochet flower granny square.

It is a step-by-step video tutorial of this crochet flower granny square to help you along.

Firstly we start with creating a magic ring. Secondly, we create a flower motif with 3D petals that pop out.

Lastly we turn the flower into a square with a new color.

Besides those, in the home decor category, why not make a wall hanging or a bed runner?

In addition, you can use these squares for a cowl, bag or baby bonnet.

Last but not least, there is many options for creating sweaters or cardigans made entirely from granny squares in different colors!

PATTERN NOTES

  • The pattern starts with creating a magic circle instead of slip knot
  • Each round is closed off with a slip stitch and worked on the right side.
  • The flower motif is squared off in Rnd 6 with working (1 V st, 2 ch, 1 V st)
  • I recommend placing a stitch marker in the corner 2 ch-sp as you work
  • The corner 2 ch-sps might sometimes get tricky to find for a beginner crocheter.

SIZE ADJUSTMENTS

  • You can make the square bigger by working additional rounds of Double crochet stitch- work 1 dc in each dc around until next corner 2 ch-sp, work (3 dc, 2 ch, 3 dc) into each corner 2 ch-sp until you reach desired size of the square
  • Granny stitch- work 3 dc between each 3-dc cluster from previous round until next corner 2 ch-sp, work (3 dc, 2 ch, 3 dc) into each corner 2 ch-sp until you reach desired size of the square
