Crochet Flower Granny Square
I’m celebrating the granny square day with my crochet flower granny square! Check out the free crochet pattern below and join in the celebrations!
GRANNY SQUARE DAY
Granny Square Day is an international online celebration of this iconic make on Instagram. It was all started back in 2014 by Susan Regalia (@suregal27). However, Susan hasn’t anticipated the popularity of the event. As a result, after 6000 posts in 2018 on the hashtag she handed the reins over to Simply Crochet Magazine. The fantastic magazine team has definitely made this day to reach its full potentail and unite crafters worldwide.
I am so excited to be joining the celebrations because it’s such a great day in the crochet community. The official granny square day is on 15th August and I can’t wait!
HOW TO GET INVOLVED?
Without a doubt, there is going to be a real buzz on Instagram! But what do you need to do?
- firstly, make a granny square! (it could be a traditional granny stitch square or you can get creative)
- secondly, take a photo on a plain background
- crop the photo so that the single square fills the entire screen of your Instagram post
- then post to Instagram with #grannysquareday2021 on 15th August
- moreover, have fun!
When viewing the hashtag on Instagram grid, it automatically assembles a virtual granny square blanket!
CROCHET FLOWER GRANNY SQUARE
I have designed a crochet flower granny square especially for this day! It consists of a sweet flower motif in the middle. The subsequent rounds are then worked to the back of the flower making it pop out and 3D. Lastly, it has a couple of rounds of lacy crochet stitches to finish it off.

I have used Deramores Studio DK yarn for my crochet flower granny square in Citrine, Light Pink, Lime and Peridot. As well as this one, I made another square all in same colour. For this square, I used Stylecraft Special DK in Apricot.
VIDEO TUTORIAL
I want everybody to be able to join in hence why I made a video tutorial of this crochet flower granny square. It is a step-by-step video tutorial to help you along. Firstly we start with creating a magic circle. Secondly, we create a flower motif with 3D petals that pop out. Lastly we turn the flower into a square.
PROJECT SUGGESTIONS USING CROCHET FLOWER GRANNY SQUARES
Overall, the list of items you can make with this crochet flower granny square is endless! Apart from the obvious choices like a blanket or a cushion cover, you can experiment with other ideas. Besides those, in the home decor category, why not make a wall hanging or a bed runner? In addition, you can use these squares for a cowl, bag or baby bonnet. last but not least, there is many options for creating sweaters or cardigans made entirely from granny squares!

PATTERN NOTES
- The pattern starts with creating a magic circle
- Each round is closed off with a slip stitch and worked on the right side
- The flower motif is squared off in Rnd 6 with working (1 V st, 2 ch, 1 V st), I recommend placing a stitch marker in the corner 2 ch-sp as you work. The corner 2 ch-sps might sometimes get tricky to find for a beginner crocheter.
SIZE ADJUSTMENTS
- You can make the square bigger by working additional rounds of
- Double crochet stitch– work 1 dc in each dc around until next corner 2 ch-sp, work (3 dc, 2 ch, 3 dc) into each corner 2 ch-sp until you reach desired size of the square
- Granny stitch– work 3 dc between each 3-dc cluster from previous round until next corner 2 ch-sp, work (3 dc, 2 ch, 3 dc) into each corner 2 ch-sp until you reach desired size of the square
