What is Tunisian crochet?

Tunisian crochet, also known as Afghan crochet, is a unique and versatile crochet technique. It combines elements of both knitting and traditional crochet.

Unlike standard crochet, which uses a single hook, Tunisian crochet employs longer Tunisian crochet hooks. It is often referred to as a Tunisian crochet hook or an Afghan hook.

This specialized hook allows the crocheter to create a distinct fabric that is thicker, and more structured. It also has a distinct look compared to traditional crochet.

The Tunisian crochet technique involves a series of loops being kept on the hook in the Forward Pass, creating a series of “vertical” stitches.

These stitches are then worked back in the opposite direction in Return Pass, creating a dense and textured fabric.

Tunisian crochet is particularly well-suited for creating projects that require a sturdy, durable, and warm fabric. For example blankets, throws, and garments.

One of the key advantages of Tunisian crochet is its versatility. The technique allows for a wide range of stitch patterns and variations, from simple and elegant to intricate and complex.

Crocheting in the Tunisian style also provides the opportunity to incorporate color changes, creating stunning and visually striking designs.

The Tunisian Log Cabin Blanket is a prime example of how this technique can be used to create a beautiful and functional piece of crochet art.

Adding color changes to the Tunisian Log Cabin Blanket

The Tunisian Log Cabin Blanket is characterized by its distinct log cabin pattern. It is achieved through a series of color changes. As well as working Tunisian crochet stitches in a particular way across all four sides.

Begin by selecting your color palette. The log cabin pattern lends itself well to a variety of color schemes. Choose from bold and vibrant to more muted and earthy tones.

Consider how the colors will interact with one another and how they will complement the overall aesthetic of your space.

Once you’ve decided on your color scheme, it’s time to start crocheting.

The key to achieving the log cabin pattern is to work in short rows across one side of the square. As well as alternating between different colors to create a distinctive square-within-a-square design.

Make sure to stick to the same color sequence when changing colors and create a truly stunning Tunisian Log Cabin Blanket.

Here are a few suggestions for different color combinations.

Tips and tricks for achieving neat edges and straight lines

One of the hallmarks of a well-executed Tunisian Log Cabin Blanket is the presence of neat, straight edges and clean, defined lines.

Achieving this level of precision can be a bit of a challenge. However, with the right techniques and a bit of practice, you can create a truly professional-looking finished product.

First and foremost, it’s essential to maintain consistent tension throughout your project. Tunisian crochet can be prone to uneven tension, which can lead to wavy or uneven edges.

To combat this, be mindful of your grip on the hook and the amount of yarn you’re pulling through with each stitch.

Pay especially close attention to the very first loop on your hook. To avoid these loops being too loose and causing a messy edge, tighten the first loop on the hook.

This will ensure that the first edge stitch is not too big or loose.

Experiment with different tension techniques. Such as holding the yarn taut or allowing it to flow more freely, to find the method that works best for you.

Similarly, when finishing a row, take care to work the last stitch with the same level of tension to create a neat edge.

If you find that your edges are still not as neat as you’d like, consider incorporating a border or edging into your design.

Finally, pay close attention to the tension and positioning of your Tunisian crochet stitches as you work. Ensure that each stitch is worked evenly and that the loops on your hook are maintained at a consistent height.

This attention to detail will help to create a cohesive, well-structured fabric with clean, straight lines.

Variations and customization options for the Tunisian Log Cabin Blanket

One of the great joys of working with the Tunisian Log Cabin Blanket pattern is the ability to customize and personalize it to suit your unique style and preferences.

Whether you’re looking to create a cozy and inviting centerpiece for your living room or a vibrant and eye-catching accent piece, the possibilities are endless.

Start by experimenting with your color palette. The log cabin pattern lends itself well to a variety of color schemes. From bold and vibrant to more muted and earthy tones.

Consider how the colors will interact with one another and how they will complement the overall aesthetic of your space. You could turn it into more of a rustic blanket by choosing earthy colors.

You could opt for a classic monochromatic look, a bold and contrasting palette, or even a gradual color fade for a more subtle and elegant effect.

Another way to customize your Tunisian Log Cabin Blanket is to play with the size and scale of the pattern. Adjust the number of rows or the dimensions of the starting square to create a blanket that is perfectly suited to your needs.

A larger, more expansive design could be ideal for a cozy living room. While a smaller, more compact version might be better suited for a bedroom or nursery.

You could also experiment with different basic Tunisian Crochet stitches or techniques. Such as the Tunisian simple stitch or the Tunisian knit stitch, to add depth and interest to your project.

No matter how you choose to customize your Tunisian Log Cabin Blanket, the key is to have fun and let your creativity shine.

Pattern Notes

  • The blanket is worked from the middle outwards
  • You will start by crocheting the small square in the middle
  • Then you will be working around the square in strips around all four edges alternating between the end of the row or tops of stitches
  • Once you work up a strip, you will then work across the edge of the strip as well as a side of the square in the middle
  • It is an easy pattern to adjust the size for a larger blanket as you can keep working strips around until you reach the desired size
  • You can also change the size of the square in the middle or change the shape into a rectangle which will result in a rectangular rather than square blanket
  • To crochet a starting rectangle instead of a square, adjust the number of rows you work up
  • The pattern uses basic crochet stitches – Tunisian purl stitch
  • You will also learn how to cast off on the last row of the blanket for neat edge
