Yarn I Used For Blakeley Crochet Poncho Pattern From Rectangle

For this gorgeous crochet poncho from rectangle I used two different yarns held together. Heatherly worsted weight yarn with Aloft which is a lace weight mohair yarn.

The combination of both yarns not only gives this poncho a cozy comfort, it also makes it super stylish.

The mohair yarn creates a subtle haze to the finished project.

There are plenty of suitable alternatives you could choose from. Here are a few I have picked:

Heatherly Yarn Alternatives:

  1. Brava 500 – hard-wearing medium-weight yarn that works wonders for projects where durability and easy care is a must.
  2. Paintbox Yarns Wool Blend Worsted – brings you the rich texture and feeling of wool with the versatility of acrylic. It’s also machine washable at 30 making it perfectly practical too.
  3. Cascade Pacific – is a worsted-weight acrylic and superwash merino wool mix that’s sure to become a firm favourite for your stash. Once in a while, a yarn comes along with all the properties of a dream – super soft, super warm, a dream on the hook, and it can be washed and tumbled.
  4. Stylecraft Special Aran with Wool – is a hugely popular, super-soft acrylic and wool-blend yarn. It comes in big value 400g balls and is machine washable for practical day-to-day items.

Aloft Yarn Alternatives:

Rico Essentials Super Kid Mohair Loves Silkis a combination of the finest kid mohair and silk. Few yarns beat its fuzzy delicacy; its gossamer weight will create beautiful makes. It looks spectacular used in textured pieces with other yarns, or on its own.

Rowan Kidsilk Haze – the blend of super kid mohair and fine silk gives Rowan Kidsilk Haze its beautiful halo and versatility.

Pattern Notes

  • the poncho is constructed from 2 simple rectangles that are crocheted separately using basic stitches. as you are crocheting a simple rectangle, you can use this easy crochet pattern and adjust the size of your poncho easily
  • you will hold both strands of yarn together – worsted yarn weight and a strand of mohair lace
  • once finished, the rectangles are crocheted together leaving spaces for the neckline and two sleeves
  • the sleeves are worked straight onto the main body in joined rounds using basic crochet stitches
  • they use front and back post double crochet creating a mock ribbed effect
  • the poncho is then finished off with a neckline
  • neckline uses front and back post double crochet to create a mock ribbed effect to match the sleeves
  • the neckline is completely customisable for custom fit
  • the great thing is you can work up as many rounds as you wish for different sizes – crew neck or mock turtle neck
  • work a few rounds for a crew neck, or keep working until the neck is tall enough for a large size mock turtle neck

Making Up The Crochet Poncho

Line up the rectangles together making sure that the foundation chains are NOT on the same side together.

Counting rows across the longer edge of the rectangle, find the middle of the fabric by counting 28 (28, 29, 31, 31, 32, 32, 33, 33) rows from one edge.

Place a stitch marker in the space between the rows (the middle) for sizes XS (L, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL).

For sizes S, M, XL place st marker around end st of next row (the middle row).

For sizes XS (L, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL) counting from the stitch marker you have just placed, count 10 rows to the left, PM in space between rows and 10 rows to the right, PM in space between rows.

You will have 20 rows on each panel marked out.

Remove the middle stitch marker.

For sizes S, M, XL counting from the stitch marker you have just placed, count 9 rows to the left, PM in space between rows and 9 rows to the right, PM in space between rows.

You will have 19 rows on each panel marked out.

Remove the middle stitch marker.

Repeat on both rectangles.

You have now marked out the neckline for your poncho.

Marking Out Arm Openings

Line up the rectangles and join yarn at any stitch marker through both rectangles.

Using a crochet hook and single crochet stitches, crochet the two rectangles together from the stitch marker towards the edge. Avoid using a slip stitch as it doesn’t create a flexible seam. Alternatively, you can use a needle and mattress stitch for a seamless look.

Repeat on both sides to create the shoulder seams. Fasten off.

Counting down the side of the rectangles, mark out 20 sts on each the front and back rectangle. This will form your arm opening.

Join yarn in next st and crochet the sides together.

Repeat on both sides. Fasten off.

You have now created the main body of your poncho with neck and arm openings.
