Lace Crochet Market Bag Pattern Details

I love how quick and easy this lace crochet market bag is to work up!

You will start working at the bottom of the bag with a foundation chain. This is a great construction method that allows you to completely customise the size of your bag.

You can adjust the width by increasing the number of chain stitches in your foundation chain.

Once you are happy with the width we will work around an oval shape and increase for a couple of rounds.

This will result in a more rounded finished bottom of the bag.

You can then also customise the finished height of the bag by working as many rounds as you need to achieve the size you are happy with.

We will also add handles that are once again completely customisable. You can have short handles for holding your bag in your hand.

Or add longer handles to be able to wear this cute market bag across your shoulder.

I used the puff stitches for the handles that achieve a more squishy handle which is far more comfortable to wear on your shoulder.

Tension/Gauge

5 V sts x 7 rounds = 10 x 10 cm/ 4 x 4 inch

Chain 42, sl st to first ch to join being careful not to twist your foundation chain.

Rnd 1: 1 stand dc, 1 ch, 1 dc in same st = first V st created, *skip next 2 sts, 1 V st in next; repeat from * to end, sl st to top of first stand dc to join, turn. [14 V sts]

Rnd 2: 1 stand dc in space between V sts, 1 ch, 1 dc in same space = first V st created, * 1 V st in next space between V sts; repeat from * around, sl st to top of first stand dc to join.

Repeat Rnd 2 another 10 times.

Then measure out a 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 inch area in the middle of your swatch. Count how many stitches and rounds/rows fit into this area.

If you have less than 5 sts and 7 rnds, you need to use a smaller hook.

If you have more than 5 sts and 7 rnds, you need to use a larger hook.

Pattern Notes

  • the market bag is worked bottom up
  • you will start with creating a foundation chain, the foundation chain determines how wide your bag is going to be
  • to adjust the width, chain multiples of 3 + 2
  • you will then work across the foundation chain, then continue working across the underside of the foundation chain to create a basic oval shape
  • we will increase on both ends of the oval for 3 rounds in total to increase the width of the bag
  • you will be working in joined rounds and turning after completing each round
  • each round starts with standing double crochet stitch for neat results
  • once you reach desired height we will then finish off the bag with two rounds of single crochet to strengthen the top edge
  • we will create handles using puff stitches, the length is completely customisable
