This is a free crochet baby bonnet pattern for prematurely born babies. However, the pattern construction is simple, so you can easily adjust it yourself.
Super comfortable and super easy to make, this crochet baby bonnet will be your go-to when keeping your little one warm.
The way the crochet bonnet is constructed, there are no seams or bulky elements that would unnecessarily make your little one uncomfortable.
I have designed this cute make for the annual Preemie Crochet Challenge organised by Helen from Sunflower Cottage Crochet.
Helen curated a great collection of crochet patterns that are suitable for prematurely born babies. Throughout the duration of the challenge, you will be able to download free preemie crochet patterns.
Each download of a pattern is a pledge to make at least one of that item to donate to a NICU, chart or parents of preemie babies directly.
This challenge is designed to send love and support to new parents of a preemie baby. The smallest gesture of bonding squares, or a tiny hat that actually fits can really help!

Crochet Baby Bonnet Pattern Notes
- the pattern starts with creating the square which is the back of the bonnet
- you can easily alter the size of this square by adding /subtracting the number of stitches or rows to make the bonnest smaller or larger
- then you will pick up hdc stitches around the three sides of the square working around the end sc of each row and the top loops of last row
- by working the hdc rows you will build up the depth of the bonnet, work more /less rows to make the bonnet smaller or larger
- the pattern is finished off by short rows of single crochet worked through back loop only for the brim of the bonnet
- you will also work 3 rows across the bottom edge of the bonnet to shape it around the neck
- the last part are the ties on each side
