Free Crochet Bucket Hat Patterns You Can Wear All Year Round
I have put together a collection of crochet bucket hat patterns, not only for summer but for all year round wear. Choose from ten beautiful patterns.
Crochet bucket hats are predominantly associated with summer and warmer months. Those easy to wear hats to protect you from the sun.
However, I have found some amazing bucket hat patterns that you can make and wear in colder months too. They are super fun makes.
The construction remains the same, all you need to change is the type of yarn you use.

How do you crochet a bucket hat step by step?
There are a few different ways on how to crochet a bucket hat easily. The easiest way which guarantees a great fit, is to start from the crown.
You will need to crochet a circle that is big enough to cover the crown of your head. The great thing about crocheting a bucket hat this way, is that you can simple place the circle on top of your head and “try it on”.
Once you are happy that the circle covers the crown of your head substantially, you can move onto crocheting the sides of the bucket hat.
You can either carry on working in rounds to build up “the depth” of your bucket hat.
The other way to do this, is to make separate motifs like granny squares that you can attach together. Once you have enough to go around your head, you can attach them to the crown circle.
The last part, you need to make for your crochet bucket hat, is the brim.
Usually, the bucket style hat brim flares out slightly. You can increase the amount of stitches around the brim evenly for a subtle brim.
On the other hand, you can also increase the amount of stitches more frequently for a “ruffle style” brim.
What yarn should I use to crochet a bucket hat?
This greatly depends on the season in which you plan to wear your bucket hat.
Naturally, for warmer months I would choose breathable materials like cotton, linen, raffia or hemp. You can read more about choosing the best yarn for summer on my blog.
On the other hand, you can also make a crochet bucket hat for colder months. In this case, chunky wool, chenille or faux fur yarns would be the best choices.
How long does it take to crochet a bucket hat for beginners?
On average, I would estimate a crochet bucket hat to take approximately 2.5 – 3 hours.
However, there are many factors that need to be taken into consideration.
Difficulty of the pattern, your skill level and thickness of the yarn should all be factored into the amount of time it will take.
However, there is a simple way to work out a rough estimate. You can simply time yourself on how long it takes you to make certain amount of stitches of the bucket hat. You can then multiply it by the estimated amount of stitches you need, to complete your project.
How do you measure your head for a crochet bucket hat?
To create a comfortable crochet bucket hat, you need to get the crown circle diameter right. This circle determines the overall fit of your hat.
Make it too small and the hat will be too tight, make it too big and it will indeed look like you are wearing a bucket on your head.
You can use the handy chart below to look up the diameter of the crown circle for your chosen size. Use this as a guide measurement.
Once you reach the diameter the chart calls for, place the circle onto your head and determine whether it feels right. Adjust if necessary.
You will not know the true fit until you work up a few rounds of the sides of the bucket hat. The sides will give you a clear indication whether your crown circle is the right size.
As to the height of the sides, this is very much down to personal preference.
