Crochet Hat From Rectangle Design Process
Making a crochet hat from a simple rectangle can be very satisfying!
All you need to crochet is a simple rectangle using basic stitches. No complicated shaping, increases, or decreases to worry about!
It is a great project for beginners stepping up from a simple granny square.
The fact that there are no increases or decreases also allows you to use plenty of different stitches and stitch combinations.
You don’t have to worry about multiples of stitches to take into consideration.
After you make a simple crocheted rectangle for your crochet beanie for your size head, you will need to attach the two shorter ends.
You can either do this by crocheting them together or using a tapestry needle and yarn.
Once you achieve the tube shape that fits on your head, all that is left to do is to cinch the top of the hat together with the running stitch.
You can also finish off the beanie with a faux fur pom pom for a stand-out beanie.
Secondly, you can opt for a yarn pom pom made from the leftover yarn.

Yarn I Used For Brooklyn Crochet Hat
For this gorgeous hat I have used the King Cole Homespun yarn. It is classed as category 3 or DK-weight acrylic yarn.
However, this type of yarn feels on the thinner end of the category 3 weight yarns, so even a thicker fingering weight yarn would be suitable for this slouchy hat.
Pending gauge swatch match of course…
There are plenty of suitable alternatives you could choose from. Here are a few I have picked:
- Sirdar Haworth Tweed – Sirdar Haworth Tweed is a soft rustic organic merino blend inspired by the Yorkshire Dales landscapes. In a variety of shades to make the perfect winter wearable.
- King Cole Big Value Tweed – this yarn has beautiful neps throughout, giving wearables a tweed look.
- Rowan Felted Tweed – is a tweed yarn made in Italy with a blend of 50% lightly felted merino wool, 25% alpaca, and 25% viscose rayon. This yarn is extremely warm but lightweight, and feels pleasant on the skin, making it perfect for sweaters, scarves, and hats.

Repeat Row 2 – 3 for pattern until you have 29 (32, 35, 38, 41, 44, 47, 50) rows in total. Do not fasten off.
Fold the finished rectangle in half with wrong side facing out lining up the two shorter ends together.
Using a crochet hook and single crochet stitch or slip stitches or yarn needle and whip stitch, attach the shorter ends together creating a tube shape.
Fasten off leaving a long tail and securely weave the ends in. Turn right side out.
You can use the traditional cinch method for your finished hat.
Attach a faux fur pom pom (optional).

How To Cinch The Top Of The Hat
Cinch the top of the hat by following these steps:
1.Thread the Tail through a Yarn Needle
2. Weave through the end stitches of each row inserting the needle through every other stitch, going in and out, weaving the tail all the way around the top edge of the hat.
3. Pull to Cinch – Once you’ve woven the tail through the stitches, gently pull the yarn tail to tighten the top. This will close the hole at the top of the hat.
4. Secure the Cinch by making a few knots with the yarn tail to secure it. Ensure it’s tight enough to keep the top closed.
5. Weave the remaining yarn tail back and forth through the fabric of the hat to hide it and secure the end. Trim any excess yarn.
