This free cable crochet hat pattern includes 8 sizes, worked bottom-up with easy stitches. Versatile as a slouchy or folded beanie, it’s beginner-friendly, customizable with pom poms, and cozy in aran yarn.

If you’ve been searching for the perfect crochet project that’s both stylish and practical, you’re in for a treat!

Today, I’m sharing a free cable crochet hat pattern that’s cozy, versatile, and sized for the whole family.

With eight different sizes to choose from, you can make matching hats for everyone, from toddlers to adults, without needing to adjust the math yourself.

This hat is worked bottom-up, starting with the brim and building your way toward the crown.

The brim gives you flexibility in styling: leave it unfolded for a relaxed, slouchy look, or fold it over for a snug and classic beanie fit. It’s like getting two hats in one!

What makes this pattern stand out is the cable texture. Cables often look intimidating, but in this design they’re super easy and beginner-friendly.

Instead of complex twists, the stitch pattern is simply a modification of the cross double crochet stitch, using front post double crochet stitches to achieve that braided, cable-like effect.

This clever shortcut means you’ll get all the beauty of cables without the headache of complicated stitch maneuvers.

Because the pattern is simple and repetitive, it works up quickly—making it a great choice for last-minute gifts, market prep, or just a cozy weekend project for yourself.

Pair it with your favorite yarn in a solid color to let the cables shine, or play with variegated and textured yarns for a completely unique look.

Whether you’re new to cables or a seasoned crocheter, this pattern is approachable, fun, and oh-so-wearable.

Cable Crochet Hat – Twistwood Beanie Pattern Details

For this design, I used an aran weight yarn—specifically, City Tweed from WeCrochet—and paired it with a 6 mm crochet hook.

This combination creates the perfect balance of stitch definition and softness, allowing the cables to really pop while still keeping the hat warm and comfortable to wear.

The subtle tweedy flecks in the yarn add just the right amount of texture and depth, making even a solid color look interesting without overpowering the stitch pattern.

Of course, you can choose any aran or worsted weight yarn you have on hand, so it’s a great stash-busting project too.

When it comes to finishing, you’ve got options!

You can top the hat with a faux fur pom pom for that trendy, store-bought look, or make a yarn pom pom if you prefer a fully handmade vibe.

Both styles work beautifully and give the hat a playful finishing touch.

On the other hand, you can also leave the pom pom off altogether. Since the crown of the hat is shaped neatly with decreases, it sits smoothly on the head without bunching or puckering.

This makes it just as stylish plain as it is with a pom pom, depending on your personal preference or the recipient’s taste.

Materials

Yarn Substitutes

  • Woodland Tweed – is a merino-alpaca blend that strikes a fine balance between rustic and refined. With just enough alpaca to take best advantage of that downy fiber’s warmth and softness, this largely Merino yarn is warm enough for woodland winters and soft enough to wear against the skin.
  • Rowan Felted Tweed Aran – beautifully blends merino wool, alpaca and viscose into luxurious, lightly pre-felted yarns. It has a gorgeous colour palette, great stitch definition and wonderful results every time.

Tension/Gauge

7.5 FPcrossdc sts x 10 rnds worked in pattern = 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 inch

Make a swatch big enough to measure out a 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 inch area in the middle of your swatch. Count how many stitches and rows fit into this area.

If you have less than 7.5 FPcrossdc sts x 10 rnds, you need to use a smaller hook.

If you have more than 7.5 FPcrossdc sts x 10 rnds, you need to use a larger hook.

Pattern Notes

  • the hat is worked bottom up
  • you will start with working on the brim in single crochet stitches worked through back loop only
  • the brim is double height so it can be folded over for a classic beanie fit or left extended for a slouchy fit
  • the brim is then attached together to form a ring
  • main body of the hat is worked around the brim, you will pick up stitched around the end single crochet of each row of the brim
  • the main body if worked in front post cross double crochet – this is a variation of the standard cross double crochet worked around the post of the stitches rather than through the top loops
  • the top of the hat at the crown is shaped with decreases incorporated and evenly spaced out
  • the small hole at the top of the crown is then sewn together
  • the hat is finished off with a faux fur pom pom which is optional, you can use a yarn pom pom or leave the hat as it is

SIZE ADJUSTEMENTS

  • the amount of short rows in the brim determines the finished circumference of the hat
  • to adjust this, add or take away even number of rows so you always have even amount of stitches to start with
  • to adjust the height of your hat, add or take away rounds before reaching the decrease section of the hat
  • Note: The pattern is written out for 8 sizes as follows 0-3m (3-9m; 9-18m; 18-24m; 2-5y; 6-13y; teen-adult woman; adult man)
  • The stitches in italic separated by [] are stitch counts, those stitches are not to be worked again.
