This is an easy and beginner friendly crochet shawl pattern using a gradient yarn cake and an easy combination of basic crochet stitches.
I am so excited to be sharing this gradient yarn cake crochet shawl pattern with you! Not only have I designed the crochet shawl, I have also picked the colours for my own gradient yarn cake.
INSPIRATION FOR MY GRADIENT YARN CAKE CROCHET SHAWL
I am in love with the coral and grey colour combination of this shawl. The colours are contrast but somehow compliment each other in a harmonious way. I name this yarn cake and shawl Painswick.
Painswick is a lovely little village not far from where I live and it has the most stunning Rococo Gardens. It is one of those places that you can visit many times but still be in awe when you visit again.
It was one of the places we had shortlisted for our small wedding ceremony! If you fancy visiting (virtually) you can see where the colour inspiration has come from.
In rococo times during 1700s people loved to show off their wealth by having elaborate gardens. They used these rich and opulent spaces to entertain and show off.
This is the feeling I tried to bring forward with my crochet shawl. Show of the beauty of crochet stitches but with minimal effort! Because let’s be honest, I don’t have maids and servants… lol

YARN I USED FOR MY GRADIENT YARN CROCHET SHAWL
The gradient yarn cake was made by Crochet UK. You can find their shop HERE. Melanie has a wide range of ready to ship yarn cakes, cakes that she has designed herself and are made to order.
You can also design your very own custom yarn cake picking from loads of colours. The cake I designed and used is Painswick and you will need 500 m length and 4-ply weight for this crochet shawl.
MATERIALS
- Crochet UK yarn cake
This pattern has been designed with Painswick yarn cake (500m; 4-ply yarn cake). However, the pattern will work with any length or -ply yarn cake as it is worked over 4-row pattern repeat. Once you set up the pattern repeats you can carry on working the 4-row repeat until you run out of yarn - 3.5 mm crochet hook (or size recommended for your chosen -ply yarn cake)
- Yarn needle
- Scissors

PATTERN NOTES
- Pattern starts at the bottom point of the shawl
- You increase at one side of the shawl creating a triangular shaped shawl
- I suggest placing a stitch marker on the side of the triangle to indicate which side is the increase side
- Each row starts with 3 ch, if you find that the increase side is getting a bit tight and stretched you can replace the beginning 3 ch stitch with 4 ch.
