Stitches And Abbreviations (US Crochet Terms)

ch – chain stitch

st(s) – stitch(es)

sl st – slip stitch

sc – single crochet

dc – double crochet

3 dc cluster – 3 double crochet cluster – work 3 dc into the indicated space/stitch

ch-sp – chain space

6 dc clusters x 7 rounds = 10 x 10 cm/ 4 x 4 inch

Chain 23.

Row 1: start working into 5th ch from hook (first 3 ch count as first dc), 3 dc cluster, * skip 2 ch, 3 dc cluster in next; repeat from * across until last 2 ch, skip next ch, 1 dc in last ch, turn. [7 clusters]

Row 2: 1 stand dc, 1 dc in same st, * skip next 3 dc cluster **, work 3 dc cluster in next space between two 3 dc clusters; repeat from * across ending last repeat at **, work 2 dc into top of beginning 3 ch from previous row, turn.

Row 3: 1 stand dc, skip next st, (1 dc in next space between two 3 dc clusters, 1 dc into the middle dc of 3 dc cluster 2 rounds below working over the space between two 3 dc clusters, 1 dc in same sp between two 3 dc clusters) **, skip next 3 dc cluster; repeat from * across to last cluster ending last repeat at **, skip next st, 1 dc in last st, turn.

Row 4: 1 stand dc, 1 dc in same st, skip next 2 sts, (1 dc in next space between two 3 dc clusters, 1 dc into the middle dc of 3 dc cluster 2 rounds below working over the space between two 3 dc clusters, 1 dc in same sp between two 3 dc clusters) **, skip next 3 dc cluster; repeat from * across to last cluster ending last repeat at **, skip next 2 sts, 2 dc in last st, turn.

Repeat Rows 3 – 4 for pattern.

Then count clusters as shown in photo above.

Pattern Notes

  • the hooded cowl is worked in one piece
  • the pattern starts with a simple cowl worked in joined rounds turning your work after each round
  • you will be using 2 colors of yarn for the stitch pattern to stand out
  • the stitch pattern is worked in multiples of 3
  • you will work 2 rounds in one color before changing to the other color
  • the hood is worked straight onto the cowl in turned rows
  • it is a rectangle shape
  • you will leave some stitches of the cowl unworked which will create the opening at the front
  • once you work up the height of the hood, you will fold the last row in half and attach to create a functional hood

Crochet Cowl

With yarn A chain 60, sl st to first ch being careful not to twist your starting chain.

Rnd 1: 1 stand dc, 2 dc in first ch, *skip 2 ch **, 3 dc cluster in next; repeat from * ending last repeat at, sl st to top of first st to join, TURN your work. [20 clusters]

Rnd 2: working in the space between two 3 dc clusters (1 stand dc, 2 dc), * skip next 3 dc cluster **, work 3 dc cluster into the next space between two 3 dc clusters; repeat from * around ending last repeat at **, sl st to top of first st to join, turn.

Join yarn B in first space between two 3 dc clusters. Do not fasten off yarn A, leave the working strand on the wrong side of your work. Change yarn between colors A and B on the wrong side of your work.

Rnd 3: (1 stand dc in first space between two 3 dc clusters , 1 dc into the middle dc of 3 dc cluster 2 rounds below working over the space between two 3 dc clusters, 1 dc in same sp between two 3 dc clusters), * skip next 3 dc cluster **, ( 1 dc in next space between two 3 dc clusters, 1 dc into the middle dc of 3 dc cluster 2 rounds below working over the space between two 3 dc clusters, 1 dc in same sp between two 3 dc clusters); repeat from * around ending last repeat at **, sl st to top of first st to join, turn.

Repeat Rnd 3 another 11 times changing yarn colors every 2 rounds.

Crochet Hood

You will continue working in the established stitch pattern but we will work in turned rows.

Row 15: (1 stand dc in first space between two 3 dc clusters , 1 dc into the middle dc of 3 dc cluster 2 rounds below working over the space between two 3 dc clusters, 1 dc in same sp between two 3 dc clusters), * skip next 3 dc cluster **, (1 dc in next space between two 3 dc clusters, 1 dc into the middle dc of 3 dc cluster 2 rounds below working over the space between two 3 dc clusters, 1 dc in same sp between two 3 dc clusters); repeat from * until you have 14 clusters, turn leaving remaining sts unworked.

Row 16: 1 stand dc, 1 dc in same st, skip next 2 sts, (1 dc in next space between two 3 dc clusters, 1 dc into the middle dc of 3 dc cluster 2 rounds below working over the space between two 3 dc clusters, 1 dc in same sp between two 3 dc clusters) **, skip next 3 dc cluster; repeat from * across to last cluster ending last repeat at **, skip next 2 sts, 2 dc in last st, turn. Fasten off. Change to yarn A.

Row 17: 1 stand dc, skip next st, (1 dc in next space, 1 dc into the middle dc of first 3 dc cluster 2 rounds below working over the space, 1 dc in same sp, * skip next 3 dc cluster, (1 dc in next space between two 3 dc clusters, 1 dc into the middle dc of 3 dc cluster 2 rounds below working over the space between two 3 dc clusters, 1 dc in same sp between two 3 dc clusters); repeat from * across to last cluster, skip next st, 1 dc in last st, turn.

Repeat Rows 16 – 17 another 6 times changing colors every 2 rows. Then repeat Row 16 one more time.

Finishing Instructions

Fold the top of the rectangle for the hood in half lining up the stitches.

Using yarn A, single crochet the top of the hood together on the wrong side of your work.

Turn right side out.

Sew in all ends and gently block to dimensions if desired.
