This is a free crochet pattern for a super comfortable and chunky crochet beanie. Keep warm in the winter months with this super stylish and easy-to-wear beanie for women.

I am excited to bring you this super cool bulky yarn crochet hat pattern! I can’t believe how super quick this stylish beanie works up!

It is worked bottom up starting with the brim using bulky weight yarn.

The main body stitch is a super fun modification of the crossed double crochet stitches. It amazes me how such a simple twist in the stitch combination can completely change the finished look of the beanie.

The stitch combination with the chunky yarn used makes for a super quick and easy make. Once you work up the body, you will cinch the top of the beanie. You can add a faux fur or yarn pom pom to the top of your hat.

This easy crochet hat pattern also comes with a powerful message as I have designed it for the Crochet Cancer Challenge.

This is a yearly event run by Christine from Sweet Potato 3. It is a great event to get involved in.

This is a community event where crochet designers come together and share new crochet hat designs.

It is lovely to see our amazing crochet community come together to make a difference by participating in the Crochet Cancer Challenge.

It is a charity event that lasts throughout October ā€“ the cancer awareness month. Almost every day, you will be able to download a free crochet hat pattern.

Each hat pattern has been designed in honor of someone we know. Someone who has battled cancer or to help bring awareness to a specific type of cancer.

By downloading the pattern for free you are taking a pledge to make a minimum of one hat from that pattern to donate.

You can give the donation to someone you know who is battling cancer, or to a cancer center.

Sanger Hat Chunky Crochet Beanie Pattern

I can’t believe this is going to be the third year being involved in this charitable event.

Last year I designed Super Comfortable Slouchy Crochet Beanie ā€“ Free Pattern I named Podaca Beanie.

PodaƧa is a beautiful small village in Croatia. My mum and I went on holiday to this beautiful place with my auntie Marta and uncle back in 2002 and 2004.

In 2022 I designed Free Textured Crochet Beanie For Women ā€“ Marta Hat Pattern which is dedicated to my dear auntie Marta.

Once again this year, I am dedicating this pattern to my dear Auntie Marta. She is undergoing preventative cancer treatment and she is doing well.

In the spirit of bringing awareness to ovarian cancer, here are symptoms of ovarian cancer from NHS website HERE.

  • the pattern has an easy construction and starts with the ribbed brim using basic stitches – single crochet stitches through back loop only

  • the brim is then joined into a continuous round by crocheting the last row and underside of foundation chain together
  • the main body of the hat is then worked around the long edge of the hat brim

  • so the number of rows of the hat brim will equal number of stitches of the hat main body
  • to adjust the size of the hat, you will need to adjust the length of the hat brim when working the short sc blo rows
  • for the main stitch pattern to work, you will need to adjust by mulitples of 3 sts
  • then simply join the hat brim into round and continue working along the long edge of the brim
  • you can refer to the handy hat sizes chart below when adjusting the size

Cinch the top of the chunky crochet beanie by following these steps:

1.Thread the Tail through a Yarn Needle

2. Weave through the end stitches of each row inserting the needle through every other stitch, going in and out, weaving the tail all the way around the top edge of the hat.

3. Pull to Cinch – Once you’ve woven the tail through the stitches, gently pull the yarn tail to tighten the top. This will close the hole at the top of the hat.

4. Secure the Cinch by making a few knots with the yarn tail to secure it. Ensure it’s tight enough to keep the top closed.

5. Weave the remaining yarn tail back and forth through the fabric of the hat to hide it and secure the end. Trim any excess yarn.
