Chunky Crochet T-shirt Yarn Basket

As quick crochet projects go, this chunky crochet t-shirt yarn basket was one of the quickest makes.

Although I have two children, I managed to finish this basket in one day from start to finish. Now that is an achievement.

Firstly, I started crocheting a circle for the bottom of my chunky crochet basket.

Then I carried on working in round to create the sides until I ran out of yarn. I love when you can use up every single bit of the yarn skein.

Secondly, I was looking for a great idea that would work for the handles.

For the sturdy leather handles I cut up my husband’s old belt (do not tell him that) and I was done.

It is a great way to Upcycle and give a new purpose to an item that would otherwise be thrown out.

CHOOSING THE PERFECT T-SHIRT YARN FOR YOUR CROCHET BASKET

I have used a recycled T-shirt yarn because it works up really fast and creates a sturdy basket. I used Tek Tek T-shirt yarn which is produced in Portugal.

The bobbins are made up from the remnant fabrics from the fashion industry.

That is another reason why I love this basket so much.

Repurposing items that would go to waste and giving them a second chance to be something useful.

That is another reason why I love this basket so much.

It uses recycled materials and I repurposed an old belt- for me that’s a win win!

This chunky T-shirt yarn crochet basket uses a great textured and dense stitch- linked double crochet.

It is a beginner friendly crochet stitch that is easy to memorize and it makes a sturdy basket.

I have worked this stitch through back loop only which ads to the texture and overall look of the basket.

Repeat Rnd 6 another four times. Fasten off.

FINISHING INSTRUCTIONS

Weave in both ends and secure by sewing over them with needle and thread.

Attach your choice of leather handles to either side of the bag.

For my handles I used my husband’s old leather belt (don’t tell him). I cut off both sides of the belt, the buckle and holes and cut the remaining piece of leather in half. Then punched 2 holes in either end of the handles and sew them onto the basket with 4-ply cotton yarn instead of thread to give the handles extra support.
