The Vintage Star join as you go crochet squares pattern

I love the join as you go crochet squares technique because it is a real time saver. Therefore, my Vintage Star crochet square pattern uses this great way of joining squares. Check out the blog post featuring a video tutorial for beginners or scroll down for the free crochet pattern.

DESIGN PROCESS

Does it ever happen to you that you set out to make one project but end up making something completely different? Without a doubt that was the case with my Vintage Star Join As You Go Crochet Squares pattern. But I am glad it has happened and this pattern has been born.

These delicate lacy crochet squares use the join as you go technique so you don’t have to make a pile of squares… Yes, the intimidating pile of squares that stares at you waiting for the ends to be sewn in and then joined together.

Above all with this join as you go crochet technique you will only have two ends to sew in per square. Last but not least, I have added a lacy crochet border to my Vintage Star crochet squares and made them into a table runner piece. But these squares lend themselves to endless possibilities to be made into blankets, cushion covers, bags even cardigans or sweaters.

YARN I USED

For my Vintage Star crochet square I have chosen Patons 100% Cotton DK in Raffia. Unlike most, I am of the unpopular opinion and do not like cotton yarn… I know, I know. Unfortunately, sometimes you have to bite the bullet and go with what’s best for the project, right? I find that this yarn is one of the easier cotton yarns to work with. Moreover, I absolutely adore this shade which adds perfectly to the vintage feel of this projects. There’s endless list of cotton yarns you could use to substitute for my chosen yarn. I expect this pattern might become a stash buster too.

JOIN AS YOU GO CROCHET SQUARES TUTORIAL

Undoubtedly, sometimes a picture speaks a thousand words. Hence why I have created this video tutorial. Firstly, I will show you how to start the squre pattern with a magic circle. Secondly, I will guide you through the rounds and in the final round I will attach the square with the join as you go technique. Finally, I will show you how to add a gorgeous lacy crochet border.

MATERIALS

• Patons Cotton DK [DK weight, 100% cotton, 210m per 100g ball] x 2 balls in Raffia (2714)
• 4 mm crochet hook
• Yarn needle
• Scissors

JOIN AS YOU GO CROCHET SQUARES FINISHED SIZE

9 x 9 cm square after blocking

TENSION

the square measures 4.5 cm after completing round 2

STITCHES AND ABBREVIATIONS (US CROCHET TERMS)

ch- chain stitch

sc- single crochet

V st- (1 dc, 1 ch, 1 dc) in same st

dc- double crochet

ch-sp – chain space

JOIN AS YOU GO CROCHET SQUARES MAIN PATTERN

Start with creating magic circle, 1 ch to secure.

Rnd 1: 12 sc into magic circle, sl st to first st to join. 12 sc

Rnd 2: 4 ch, 1 dc in same st at the bottom of 4 ch (counts as first V st), 1 V st in each st around, sl st to 3^rd cg of beginning 4 ch. 12 V st

Rnd 3: sl st into first 1 ch-sp, 1 ch (doesn’t count as a st), (2 sc, 2 ch, 2 sc) into each 1 ch-sp around, sl st to first sc. 48 sc, twelve 2 ch-sp

Rnd 4: sl st into next sc, sl st into next 2 ch-sp, (5 ch, 1 sc into next 2 ch-sp) repeat around 11 times, 2 ch, 1 dc into first sc to join. twelve 5 ch-sps

Rnd 5: (5 ch, 1 sc into next 5 ch-sp, (5 dc, 3 ch, 5 dc) into next 5 ch-sp, 1 sc into next 5 ch-sp) repeat 4 times working last sc of last repeat into the first 5 ch-sp to complete the round.

BORDER PATTERN

V st for border pattern changes to (1 dc, 2 ch, 1 dc).

Join yarn in any corner 3 ch-sp.

Rnd 1: 5 ch (counts as 1 dc + 2 ch), 1 dc in same 3 ch-sp, 2 ch, 1 V st into same 3 ch-sp, ** (miss 2 dc of the square, 1 V st in next dc, miss 2 dc and 1 sc, (1 V st, 2 ch, 1 dc) in next 5 ch-sp, miss 1 sc and 2 dc, 1 V st in next dc, work 1 V st around joining st between 2 squares) repeat across to corner 3 ch-sp, (1 V st, 2 ch, 1 V st) into corner 3 ch-sp; repeat pattern from ** around all squares, sl st to 3^rd ch of beg 5 ch.

Rnd 2: sl st to next 2 ch-sp, 5 ch (counts as 1 dc + 2 ch), 1 dc in same 3 ch-sp, ** (1 V st, 2 ch, 1 V st) into corner 2 ch-sp, 1 V st into each 2 ch-sp around until next corner 2 ch-sp; repeat from ** around, sl st to 3^rd ch of beg 5 ch.

Repeat Rnd 2 as many times as you wish for a wider border.

Fasten off.

Sew in all ends and firmly block to open up the lace pattern.

MY PROJECT

As mentioned above, I have used these lacy crochet squares to make a runner for the top of my dresser unit. I made 20 squares and joined them together in a 4 x 5 layout and added 3 rounds of lacy crochet border.
