I used this technqiue for The Winter Wishes Blanket – a blanket consisting of 7 different hexagon designs, lace joins and an interlocking crochet border!

Join As You Go Hexagons Crochet Blanket Layout

Here is a suggested layout on how to space your crochet hexagons out. You can by all means reshuffle your hexagons and change the layout.

Alternatively, you can place them inside a bag and randomly pull them out and join!

JOINING HEXAGONS

Once you have all the hexagons you need for your blanket, it is time to join them together.

If you do not have the space and equipment to block the whole blanket when finished, I suggest blocking the hexagons individually for a neater result.

There are many techniques of joining hexagons and you might have your preferred method.

You can join them one by one using various methods like single crochet, whip stitch or mattress stitch.

For this blanket I opted for the join-as-you-go method.

The method is explained in the video tutorial to guide you through joining the hexagons.

This is a great method of joining the hexagons togethers as you will use one continuous join without cutting yarn = this saves so many ends!

Join As You Go Crochet Hexagons Diagram

Follow the joining diagram below. It might be a little confusing at first glance, I strongly recommend watching the walkthrough video to show you the way around the diagram!

A couple of tips for success is to take a marker pen and draw over the arrows you have already worked as you move through the diagram.

Secondly, use a piece of scrap yarn or a stitch marker and mark the first edge you work across.

This way you will know where you started and which way your blanket should lay if you ever lose the direction in which you should work.

After joining all hexagons, sl st to 2nd ch of beginning chain 4 to join. Do not fasten off.
