How do you make an easy crochet skirt?
The basic shape you will need to crochet a skirt is a rectangle. You can easily crochet a rectangle in the short rows across the shorter side.
It should be wide enough to wrap around your waist and hips, as well as long enough to reach your knees, ankles, or whichever length you prefer.
You can easily fix the skirt at the top by adding a ribbon, ribbed waistband, or a simple tie to pull the skirt in at the waist.
The second option of crocheting a skirt is starting at the waist and working in joined rounds. This way you can start with a smaller circumference which will fit your waist.
As you work more rounds, you can evenly increase the amount of stitches in each round. This way the circumference will be bigger by the time you reach your hips.
Once you crochet over your hips, you can stop increasing as you reach the widest part. Alternatively, you can continue increasing every round which will produce an A-line or flared-out skirt.
This would be a great option for summer skirts or lacy skirts using light cotton blends as a yarn choice.
How do you crochet a flowy skirt?
Crochet skirts with a nice flow and drape can be easily achieved by following a few simple steps.
Firstly, you will need to choose a light and airy yarn. I would recommend a yarn as thin as possible for a lightweight crochet fabric.
Sports weight or 4-ply weight would be an ideal choice. This yarn would produce a light fabric and would work up fairly quickly.
Secondly, for a flowy skirt you will need a stitch that produces light fabric. The best stitches are lacy stitches with openwork that would make a gorgeous skirt.
As an example, you could use the lacy shell stitch that is not only beautiful but open enough to produce a light fabric.
The finished fabric will have a lot of movement and will not be stiff.
To create a flowy shape to your crochet skirt, you will also need to add some shaping to your skirt. In this case, a straight rectangle sewn together to make a skirt will not produce the desired result.
The best way would be to start working top-down in joined rounds. Then simply increase each round by a few stitches which will produce a crochet skirt with a nice flow and drape.
Crochet Gauge Basics 101 Course
You were excited to make your first crochet sweater only to get overwhelmed by trying to understand the gauge…
You struggled to match the pattern gauge and thought “this will do”…
You think you worked it out and started making your sweater…
Only to realise it is not going according to plan and your sweater is way too big or too small…
You are not alone!
But I have something to help you!
How much yarn do you need for a crochet skirt?
The most accurate way to work out the quantity needed for a crochet skirt or any other project is to make a gauge swatch.
Once you have your gauge swatch you need to weigh it on some kitchen scales.
Then measure the two edges of the gauge swatch, edge X and edge Y. After that multiply X times Y. This is the area that the swatch covers.
So for that certain area you will need the measured weight of yarn.
Example: my swatch weighs 20 grams, edge X measures 10 cm, edge Y measures 12 cm.
X multiplied by Y equals 120 squared cm. That means to cover 120 squared cm I will need 20 g of yarn.
As an example, I will need to crochet a rectangle that measures 100 x 120 cm for my skirt. The area covered is 1200 squared cm.
Now you need to work out how many swatches you need to cover this larger area. To do so, you need to divide 1200 squared cm by the area the swatch covers 120 squared cm.
This equals 10. This means that you will need 10 swatches joined together to cover the area for the skirt.
That also means you will need 10 times more yarn. 10 multiplied by 20 g equals 200 g.
You can apply this technique to any project.
How do you crochet a summer skirt?
To crochet a summer-style skirt you will need to take two things into consideration.
Firstly, it is the choice of yarn. Bamboo, cotton or linen yarns are amongst the most popular choices.
As a summer crochet skirt is specifically worn in hot weather, you need to opt for a summer-suitable yarn.
There are many factors to take into consideration, not just the fiber content. Follow my handy guide of 9 tips to choose the best yarn.
Secondly, you need to choose the stitch wisely. Open lacy stitches will create a more breathable fabric suitable for warm weather. I have a collection of 14 Beautiful Lacy Crochet Stitches Perfect for Summer Makes right here on the blog.
