List of 10 free items to crochet for dogs and other pets
A compilation of 10 cute and useful items you can crochet for dogs, puppies, and dog lovers. Choose from these practical free crochet patterns for your furry friend.
We crochet for loved ones and family members. Why not make something cute and thoughtful for your dog too?
At the end of the day, they say a dog is a man’s best friend, right?
Whether you want to crochet something fun and cute or something more practical, your four-legged friend will surely appreciate it.
What should I crochet for my dog?
You can crochet two different types of dog patterns for dogs – practical items to make their life easier and more comfortable.
Secondly there are items you can crochet for so much fun and make them look a little more cuter (if that is even possible!)
If practical items are more your jam, there are a few things you can crochet for your dog. Things that will make it more comfortable like pet beds, soft and warm blankets, and small cushions.
On the other hand items like crochet dog bandanas, hats, and collars are more for the aesthetics and fun. However, you always need to be mindful of your dog’s comfort.
Do not be disheartened if your dog shakes or chews the item off. In this case, it is best to stick to practical crochet items your dog will actually enjoy and use.
Can you crochet dog toys?
You can absolutely crochet toys for dogs! The great thing is that you can actually make a toy resembling your dog’s favorite item!
If your dog enjoys chewing your slippers, why not make him his very own crochet slipper to chew on?
I am not sure how this might affect your dog’s behavior, but we are here enjoying crocheting cute things for your dogs. There are far more experienced folks out there when it comes to canine behavior and training.
If you ever bought a soft toy for your dog from a shop, you know they might not last very long. With crochet toys for dogs, you can actually use stronger materials to make them last a little longer.
You can use strong type of yarn like cotton, T-shirt yarn, crochet cord, or crochet rope. These materials would produce a super strong crochet toy for your dog (that might actually last longer than a couple of hours).
The great thing is you can actually cut up an old T-shirt and make T-shirt yarn at home. Repurposing an old T-shirt into something your dog will enjoy is a win-win for me.
I will say that stuffing the toy with polyfill is not recommended. Some dogs are crazy and would literally eat anything. Even items that will make them ill – like polyfill.
However, if you crochet the toy with a cotton cord or crochet rope, there is no need for stuffing. This way your dog can enjoy chewing his toy without you having to worry about him swallowing anything.

Can I crochet a blanket for a dog?
You absolutely can! One thing to remember however is, that you will probably wash this blanket way more often than any other blankets.
So with this in mind, choose your yarn wisely. Yarns that wash well at higher temperatures are definitely recommended.
100% cotton yarn is a great choice. I have used 100% acrylic yarn too for a crochet blanket for dogs and it lasted very well. If you do not mind the yarn felting together you could also use 100% wool.
Can you crochet a dog bed?
Personally I prefer dog beds with removable covers that you can wash in the washing machine. At the end of the day, dogs are quite messy, aren’t they?
However, that does not mean you shouldn’t crochet one! You could repurpose a couple of old cushion inserts by sewing them together to make a pet bed shape.
Once you have a basic dog bed shape you can crochet a cover for it using simple stitches. A button or zipper fastening would be a good idea, it can be removed and washed just like a blanket.
