How many squares do I need to crochet a granny square blanket?
There is no written rule as to how many squares you need in total. That is the beauty about crocheting a blanket, you can use as many squares as you need.
However, to give you a rough idea how many squares you might need, you will need two things.
Firstly, you need to take a measurement of your finished square. Whether you have followed a certain pattern for a granny square, or you simply created a basic square yourself, measure it.
Next you need to decide on the desired size of your finished blanket. Would you like it to be lap blanket, single bed or double bed size?
As an example, I would like a lap blanket which measures 120 x 150 cm. To make things easier, let’s assume my granny square measures 10 x 10 cm.
That means you would need 12 x 15 squares, which is 180 squares.
That is a basic way to work out how many squares you would need for a blanket of your chosen size.
What size crochet hook is best for granny square blanket?
The size of your crochet hook greatly depends on the yarn you choose to work with for your granny square blanket.
Worsted weigh or aran weight yarn seems to be a popular choice for granny square blankets. This weight is perfect as it isn’t too thin, so it won’t take you ages to make.
On the other hand, it isn’t too thick, so your blanket won’t weigh too heavy.
For worsted weight yarn you will need a H-8 5mm crochet hook. Of course you can use slightly smaller or larger hook, this completely depends on your gauge and how tight or loose you want the texture to be.
How do you crochet a granny square for absolute beginners?
Crocheting a granny square can be so relaxing once you know how to.
However, I know that it can also be a frustrating process when it just isn’t making a lot of sense or working out the same way as the pictures.
